Ink Ink
Whatever digital printers you use, be it an A3 inkjet proofer or a grand format solvent printer, you will usually have a choice over what ink to use. This will be in the form of the OEM ink or a third party manufactured alternative.

Third Party Ink

Why?
Whatever digital printers you own, you will probably wish that the original OEM ink cost you less. Whether you use it for proofing, or production purposes, ink costs hit the bottom line, and if you are producing volumes of print through your machines, then any savings made could be substantial.

With OEM ink usually sold at a premium, third party ink manufacturers have been quick in fulfilling the demand for lower cost alternatives. The difficulty is choosing the right ink for your machine and requirements.

Questions must be answered before you should consider changing over to a third party ink, including:

Is it compatible with my printer? - This is very important, as any damage caused to your printer would be outside any manufacturer's warranty. If the ink manufacturer is stating compatibility, then ensure they are offering their own form of warranty or compatibility guarantee.

Am I a guinea pig, or is this ink a proven alternative? - This is another important question, which needs to be answered. Has the ink been tested thoroughly within a real world environment, or just in a test laboratory.

Is it compatible with my preferred media? - The last thing you need, having just changed the ink in your printer, is to then have to source new media as well!

Will it produce the same range of colour as the OEM ink? You need to ensure that the ink has an equivalent or improved colour ‘gamut’ than the OEM ink. There is no point in swapping to a lower cost ink at the expense of print quality

What longevity has it got? Depending on the printing device you operate, this is a very important question. If you are using a pigmented ink (solvent or water based), then you will need to know about the quality of the ink in question, including what testing has been carried out, and what the findings were. Do the inks carry any warranties or guarantees in respect of lightfastness and durability, abrasion resistance and compatibility with finishing films and laminates.

Colour Matters can help

-Our Own Inks
Where we feel there is a commercial need, based on the cost of an OEM ink or where we can source a better performing ink (or both!), we will offer our own ink solutions for certain printers currently in use. We ensure all inks have been thoroughly tested and are fully compatible with the printer in question. We provide full assistance in the change over procedure, and on going support to make sure you get the best out of your ink.

We are currently the exclusive UK distributor for Inkware inks for the Oce Arizona Digital Screen Press.

- Other Third Party Inks
Are you planning to change the inks in your printer to an alternative ink supplier? Do you manufacture your own ink solutions and need assistance in the implementation process for your customers?

Colour Matters can assist in this process. Our services include:

On Site Implementation - To ensure a smooth changeover, it is essential that certain procedures are followed, depending on the Machine/Ink combination.

This service is aimed at production inkjet and toner based printers. For desktop inkjet printers, following the ink manufacturer's guidelines should sufficient.

Careful bleeding and flushing of the printer's ink supply system needs to be performed. The new ink needs to be introduced in a clean environment to ensure success. Once installed, the ink needs to be tested and evaluated. Depending on the machine and ink type, ink restrictions need to be set within the RIP, and media needs to be calibrated and linearized. At this point you are ready to create/install media ICC profiles..

ICC Profiling - To enable you to get the most from your new ink solution, the profiling of all of your print media is essential. If you continue to use media profiles for the previous ink, you will end up with poor results. We can perform on-site profiling for printers that are driven by a Postscript Rip or Driver, or remote profiling for desktop printers that are operated through the standard printer driver on your computer.
